Inter-Dimensional Consciousness Cartography

Soul Atlas is a live-streamed artwork in which I will spend 24 hours in an 8-foot cube. During this time, I will track various states of consciousness. The work will include a progressive discourse on these states of consciousness that will be drawn and painted onto the interior of the cube.

The work is about personal alchemy. The cube will act as the Temenos, the alchemical vessel. Soul Atlas explores the terrain I call “Me” and asks the question, “What am I and how do I make sense of the multiplicity of Being?”.

Utilizing various tracking methods, I will explore and map thoughts, sensations, emotions, and visions. Visual mapping will be written, drawn and painted onto the interior of the Temenos. Through storytelling, I will explore the mythic journey of the Soul.

Over the course of the work, I will share and demonstrate various methods of shifting consciousness. Some examples are: Vipassana meditation, chanting, drumming and shamanic journeying.

The process is meant to be both instructive and demonstrative.

Background

Soul Atlas is the culmination of a series of works in which I have used various meditations, actions and processes to track and map my states of consciousness. While some of my work takes the form of maps, all of the work I create is the expression of my inner being and the journey and evolution of the form to its final destination. These include: The First Step, Stalking the Moment, Ever-Unfolding Thought Form and the Mythic Painting Series. For more on this work see the BACKGROUND page.

Temenos

The Temenos is an 8’ cube constructed of ¼” ply wood layers with spaces between to allow for air flow. There will be a two-foot square door on one side.

The exterior will be painted with Musou black paint, a paint that absorbs 99.4% of light. The interior will be papered with 8’ wide white paper. Above the Temenos, will be a single light. When viewing the Temenos, the lighting with the paint will create the experience of looking into space. Inside, there will be a 20” x 40” box on wheels, holding a variety of supplies, including various light sources.

Live Streaming

Utilizing a GoPro camera and an iPhone, Soul Atlas will be live-streamed. Still images will also be posted online. The GoPro will allow the viewer to share my visual perspective.
